I would agree that it is probably just a good excuse.

You can make or ruin the shape of your sail by having good/bad batten tention and cunningham, outhaul, mainsheet/traveller usage. Far more important than the cloth.

I have experienced some quite differing cuts of sail though. Over the past 8 years, I have had 6 h16's. Each have had varying cuts of sail. Again, the weight of your crew will be critical. All the white sails I had,(3) were all really flat cut. 1 of the coloured sails was flat, the other 2 were really full. Good if you are on the heavy side, good if you are off the wind but not too good on the wind.
