i would rate the 16 as harder to sail (really well) than a
Spitfire. The Tornado (if you have the strength) is the
easiest of the three. Reaction times are SOOO much
slower, even though the boat is travelling faster. The '16
and Spitfire both 'feel' as fast due to their relative size.
A Spitfire is the closest you'll get to a dinghy feel, and as
such you need quick reaction times, and hence the
Tornado sailor probably came unstuck!

from experience a 16 takes some mastery.
(but i still love my Spitfire!!!)
